Surya Namaskar - Sun Salutation - is the twelve-pose flowing sequence that opens nearly every yoga class in the world. Performed in sync with the breath, one full round moves the body through forward folds, planks, backbends and standing poses in a continuous loop.
The name honours Surya, the sun, because the sequence was traditionally practiced at dawn as a moving meditation of gratitude. Today it is used as the most efficient warm-up in yoga: a single round engages nearly every major muscle group, mobilizes the spine, raises heart rate gently, and synchronizes breath with motion.
Benefits include full-body mobility, functional strength across arms, core and legs, improved cardiovascular tone with repeated rounds, and a centered, breath-led focus that carries into the rest of the practice.
At Zuga Fitness, Surya Namaskar is the standard opening of our Vinyasa classes and a dedicated weekly module in our live beginner classes, where instructors coach each transition on camera to keep form safe as pace builds.
